Importance of Akshay Tritya in India

The festival of Akshaya Tritiya also known as Akha Tij is celebrated in the springtime and has utmost importance for the people from Hindu and Jain religions. This year, Akshaya Tritiya falls on 7th May 2019 and we are excited already. If this festival falls on Tuesday, it becomes even more auspicious.

In Sanskrit, Akshaya stands imperishable and Tritiya denotes the number “3”. Therefore, Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on the third tithi (date) of Shukla Paksha (bright half) of Vaisakha month. Celebrated nationwide, Akshaya Tritiya is adorned with high spirits and love, signifying “third day of unending prosperity”.

Why Buying Gold Is So Auspicious On This Particular Day?

The next question that naturally seeps into mind is why do people usually go only for gold and no other stuff? The reason why Hindu culture gives supreme importance to this yellow metal is that the purity it attains after evolving through fire. Fire symbolizes the most undiluted and brightest forms of energy that purges everything that comes under its influence. In our culture, sacred things symbolize prosperity and good fortune which is why gold gets preference over all other acquisitions and assets. It is equally noteworthy that gold has always been preferably gifted to ladies on all important occasions as their birth right. The logic that runs behind this is that ladies in previous eras were less educated and more prone to be tricked by other half of society. If she had some gold in her hand, she could always use it as her insurance under unkind circumstances and save her family. It is she and only she who hold the right to wear, trade, accumulate, and possess gold for safety of her loved one.

There are a number of lores on the history of the auspicious events that had occurred on this day. One of which says that on this day, Ganges (Hindu holy river) came to Earth and purified mankind.

For Hindus, The auspicious festival of Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated as a birthday of Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.  It is also believed that on this day, Ved Vyas and Lord Ganesha and started writing Mahabharata. Also, according to Hindu Mythology, Akshaya Tritiya marks the beginning of Treta Yuga.

In Jainism, this day is also known by the name of Varshi Tapa and is celebrated to commemorate Tirthankara’s (Rishabhanatha) ending his one-year asceticism and consuming sugarcane juice poured into his cupped hands.

According to some stories, Sudama, Lord Krishna’s friend, visited Lord Krishna and brought him puffed rice (Poha). As asked by his wife, he could not ask for any financial help from Lord Krishna. When he reached home, he found his house filled with riches and gold.  Therefore, it is believed that gifting Gold on Akshaya Tritiya grows your wealth. Buying Gold or Silver and gifting it to others on Akshaya Tritiya ensures prosperity and eternal wealth (as the name suggests). Therefore, on this day people invest in Gold or Silver jewellery. Some people also invest in Property. Also, on this day,  Kubera attained his riches and a position as a custodian of wealth by praying to Lord Shiva at Shivapuram. Therefore,

Akshaya Tritiya is also considered as the most suited day to get married.
